Ether

The more correct name of this organic compound is diethyl ether. It's one of the ethers, which are a class of organic compounds that contain one or more ether group – an oxygen atom connected to two alkyl or aryl groups.

An alkyl group contains a number of carbon atoms, n, and 2n + 1 hydrogen atoms. Diethyl ether, as its name implies, has two ether groups, each containing two carbon atoms and five hydrogen atoms: CH3–CH2–O–CH2–CH3.

An aryl group is derived from an aromatic ring. The simplest example is phenyl (C6H5), which is a benzene molecule (C6H6) less one hydrogen atom.
